look, you've earned me some loot!

Thanks in no small part to some free publicity, site traffic here at AP has skyrocketed. Because of this, Don has finally agreed that I do, in fact, need a new camera. Hooray! Since photos are a pretty intrinsic part of this whole deal-io, I've been pestering him for a while to get me a new digital camera, as the old one is one that I've had since before I went to college and isn't very good at things like close-up shots of delicious salads or action shots of adorable kitty-cats or what have you.

So! I'm getting this awesome camera. Not a high-end SLR or anything, but exactly what I need for my current camera usage, and maybe even a bit more. We played with it at CompUSA the other night and we both agreed that it was pretty darn cool. Then it turned out that Amazon had it for super-cheap, and we were super-sold. We won't be buying it for a few days -- must work out a few things regarding Don's job-or-lack-thereof situation -- but we will be buying it.

So thanks, clickers! You got me a new camera! Hooray!

Hah. I'd be surprised if much of that skyrocketing had to do with my post.

I mean, uh, yeah. You owe me a beer now.

I can't afford to buy you a beer, I'm buying a camera. ;)

Anyway, some of it certainly was from you -- check my sitemeter for the day you linked to me and several days afterwards.

Not even a cheap beer?

Cheap beer is not worth buying. Or so I'm told.

Cool! And hey, we do what we can. Hmm... wonder what I could ask for if my site-traffic went up... better come up with something and then beg all my blogger-friends to link to me!

Hello my local home renovation expert :) (Its Stephanie by the way). I have actual home project questions!!!
What kind of primer and paint is good to use on kitchen cabinets? We have old cabinets that are ugly and I want to paint them...and want them to stay decent looking for a couple years.
And also...I need to remove wallpaper, not a huge amount, from one of the walls. What brand tools do you recommend? I know the little tool that puts little holes in the paper than the liquid stuff goes on...do they sell a little kit or something? Or do I have to buy everything separate?

Thanks for any help :)
Steph (Gabby says hi too, well really AHHH but that measn hello hehe)

Hi Steph! For your cabinets, use a good water-based primer with a mold and mildew blocker built in (we usually use KILZ, but the paint folks can recommend one, too). Then use a latex paint in semi-gloss to go on top. As for the wallpaper, they do sell kits, usually, but I prefer to just buy the wheel thingie and make my own liquid solution -- particularly when there's a baby present! Just use three parts water to one part distilled vinegar and stick it in a spray bottle. It's a lot safer than the chemicals they use in those solutions, and cheaper, too.

AHHH to Gabby, too.

Oops -- almost forgot! Make sure you sand your cabinets down before you put the primer on! Nothing heavy-duty, just enough to get any old varnish off and roughen up the surface a bit so the primer will bond better. Make Billy do it, he's big and strong.

Thanks! My dad told me about sanding the cabinets to get the primer to stick...now I just need to find a free weekend to get it all done. My new floor is getting put in as I type so I need to get my butt in gear!
Latex paint...Behr is latex right? Thats what we used in the rest of the house.

Thanks also for the baby friendly mixture for the wallpaper. I need to go play in home depot tomorrow!!!

Yes, Behr is latex. Most brands are -- it's actually illegal to sell oil-based paint now unless it is for painting on metal, since it's so toxic. But I like Behr the best anyway. :)

That's funny because Behr is my 2nd least favorite, behind Glidden. I really like the American Tradition paint from Lowe's. Restoration Hardware makes some kick-ass paint too, but it's expensive. We have that in a few rooms in our house and it was a dream to paint with. I'll never buy Behr again.

Funny wallpaper removal story. I sent Billy to Home Depot for the supplies to take it all down and while he was gone, I thought maybe I should re-read your post on wallpaper to make sure I remember correctly. So I read the whole thing and Im like yea I remember!! Then I get to the part about the only exception...and I think to myself, I think that ugly wallpaper is vinyl. AH! So I run to the kitchen and yank the paper and down it comes, just the contact paper stuff was left! So Billy bought everything for nothing, all I needed was my sponge and a putty knife!
Oh well, at least its down and wasnt too bad.
Now I just have to get the ugly 1960's mirrors down (which I am sure will lead to like a million years of bad luck for me but at least I will have a pretty kitchen to help pass the time) and I can start painting!

Thanks again for all the wallpaper and paint info! you rock!
